Bridging Education Gaps to Give Every Child Quality Learning and Equal Opportunity

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday urged teachers to help build an education system that provides every student with equal opportunities, quality learning and a brighter future, stressing the important role educators play in shaping the country’s next generation.

Gandhi made the remarks while extending greetings to teachers on National Teachers’ Day, which is observed on the birth anniversary of former President and eminent educationist Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He said teachers, through their knowledge, dedication and service, provide direction to students and make an invaluable contribution to the nation.

Highlighting concerns over the existing education system, Gandhi said India needs to work towards a system in which every student can access quality education and equal opportunities. His remarks also underline the wider challenge of ensuring that children do not merely enter schools but receive meaningful learning and adequate support to progress.

Teachers remain central to addressing these gaps. They can identify students who need additional academic support, adapt teaching methods to different learning needs and encourage critical thinking and creativity. Strengthening teacher training and professional development can further improve classroom learning, particularly in schools facing resource and staffing challenges.

Government policies also have an important role in reducing inequalities in education. Better infrastructure, learning materials, digital access, scholarships, nutrition and other forms of support can help disadvantaged students remain in school and continue their education. Initiatives such as Samagra Shiksha and PM SHRI aim to improve school quality while promoting inclusion and equitable access.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also paid tribute to teachers and Radhakrishnan, describing teachers as those who shape minds, nurture values and lay the foundations of the nation’s future. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh remembered Radhakrishnan as a distinguished philosopher, writer, statesman and educationist who made significant contributions to institution building.

Ultimately, building an equal education system requires more than increasing enrolment. Ensuring that every child has access to capable teachers, safe schools, quality learning and opportunities for further education or employment will be crucial to turning universal schooling into genuine equal opportunity.
