Bridges, biofuel, boost: PM’s big ticket Assam projects

Guwahati buzzed with activity on September 14, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Assam to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of projects worth over ₹18,530 crore. His day-long visit reflected the government’s push to modernize the North-East, improve connectivity, strengthen healthcare, and boost clean energy.

PM Modi began his day in Darrang, where he laid the foundation stones for the Darrang Medical College & Hospital and the GNM School and BSc Nursing College. These institutions are expected to strengthen medical education and healthcare delivery in the region. “Investing in healthcare and education here is not just a necessity but a foundation for long-term prosperity,” experts noted.

He then moved on to address traffic and urban mobility in Guwahati. PM Modi laid the foundation for the Guwahati Ring Road Project, which aims to reduce congestion, improve connectivity, and make commuting smoother for residents. At the same time, he inaugurated the Kuruwa, Narengi Bridge over the Brahmaputra, calling it a lifeline that will connect remote regions, boost trade, and create new opportunities for local businesses.

At Numaligarh Refinery in Golaghat, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Assam Bio-ethanol Private Limited Plant, emphasizing the importance of clean energy in reducing dependence on fossil fuels. He also laid the foundation for a Polypropylene Plant at NRL, which is expected to boost Assam’s petrochemical sector and generate employment opportunities. “Assam will emerge as a hub for clean energy and industrial growth in the North-East,” officials said.

Amid his packed schedule, PM Modi paid tribute to Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his 100th birth anniversary. He released a commemorative coin and stamp, remembering Dr. Hazarika as a champion of India’s unity and a voice for the North-East. “Decades ago, the North-East faced neglect and conflict. Bhupen Da gave voice to unity and hope. Today, we are working to fulfill that dream,” the Prime Minister said.

Tomorrow, PM Modi will continue his tour in West Bengal and Bihar, inaugurating the new terminal of Purnea airport and launching projects worth ₹36,000 crore. Observers note that his approach is clear: linking infrastructure, industry, and social development to accelerate growth across India’s North-East and adjoining regions.

From bridges to hospitals, roads to clean energy plants, PM Modi’s initiatives in Assam are not just about laying foundations, they are about connecting people, creating opportunities, and building a vision for tomorrow.
