South African cricket stars Dewald Brevis and Aiden Markram made headlines at the SA20 Season 4 player auction, becoming the most expensive buys in the league’s history.

Brevis, 22, was snapped up by the Pretoria Capitals, coached by Sourav Ganguly, for a staggering R16.5 million (approx Rs 8.3 crore), smashing the previous record of R9.2 million paid for Tristan Stubbs in 2022. Ganguly praised the youngster’s talent, particularly his skill against spin and game-changing potential in T20 cricket, calling him a “fantastic talent” beyond the price tag.

T20I captain Markram joined Durban’s Super Giants for R14 million (approx Rs 7 crore), after Sunrisers Eastern Cape attempted to retain him using a Right to Match card at R12.4 million. SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith welcomed the high investment, highlighting the platform’s role in developing South African talent both domestically and internationally.

Overall, the six franchises spent R129.3 million (approx Rs 65 crore) on 84 players, including R116.9 million on South Africans. The auction also spotlighted emerging talent, with Under-23 players such as Kwena Maphaka, Janco Smit, Bayanda Majola, and JJ Bason earning contracts for their SA20 debuts.

Season 4 of SA20 is scheduled from December 26, 2025, to January 25, 2026.
