Breaking Mining Barriers: SECL Trains 19 Women as Heavy Equipment Operators

South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) has launched a pioneering initiative to train women employees in the operation of Heavy Earth Moving Machines (HEMM) , marking a significant step towards increasing women's participation in mining operations.

The first-of-its-kind training programme is being conducted in Korba district of Chhattisgarh , where 19 women employees selected from various operational areas of SECL are undergoing specialised training. The 12-day programme, which began on July 6 , focuses on developing technical skills required to operate heavy mining equipment such as dumpers and shovels .

Under the initiative, the participants are being trained by experienced HEMM operators, who are providing hands-on guidance on machine handling, operational procedures, and safety practices involved in mining activities.

An SECL official said that after successfully completing the training, the women employees will be deployed as regular HEMM operators at SECL mines, allowing them to take up key operational roles in the coal mining sector.

The initiative reflects SECL's efforts to promote gender inclusion and equal employment opportunities in a traditionally male-dominated mining industry. By equipping women employees with specialised skills, the company aims to create more avenues for women to contribute to core mining operations.

SECL, a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd , operates several coal mines across Chhattisgarh and plays a crucial role in meeting the country's energy requirements. The new programme is expected to encourage greater participation of women in technical and field-based roles within the mining sector.
