Breaking a 48 year gap, woman joins Guruvayur temple’s governing board

In a historic development, the Guruvayur Devaswom Board, which manages the famous Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple, one of the most revered Lord Krishna temples in India , has appointed a woman member after nearly five decades.

M. U. Shinija has been inducted into the nine member governing panel that oversees the administration of the temple located in Guruvayur in Kerala. Her appointment ends a 48 year gap without female representation in the temple’s administrative body.

Shinija has been nominated as a representative of the Communist Party of India.

Reports indicate that women had representation on the administrative panel during the 1970s . However, after the Guruvayur Devaswom rules were amended in 1978 , no woman had been appointed to the Board until now.

The newly appointed Chairman, A. V. Gopinath, welcomed the development and described it as a meaningful moment. Speaking to the media after taking oath, he said it was particularly significant that the Board got a woman member after 48 years , and that too on International Women's Day.

The temple attracts millions of devotees every year and is considered one of the most important pilgrimage centres dedicated to Lord Krishna in South India. The Devaswom Board manages the temple’s administration, finances, and religious activities.

Shinija’s appointment is therefore being seen as not only a personal milestone but also a symbolic step towards broader representation in temple administration .
