Brazil’s President Heads to Washington in Bid to Salvage Trump Relationship
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met US President Donald Trump in Washington for high-stakes talks aimed at stabilising strained relations marked by tariffs , security concerns , and trade disputes .
The visit follows earlier US tariffs of up to 50 percent on Brazilian exports , later partially eased, while a Section 301 trade investigation continues, covering digital payments , ethanol access , deforestation rules , and broader trade practices.
A central agenda item is organised crime cooperation , including intelligence sharing and joint enforcement against transnational gangs. Both sides are also discussing whether Washington should label Red Command (CV) and PCC as foreign terrorist organisations , a move Brazil strongly rejects.
Brazil is pushing back on sovereignty concerns while seeking expanded cooperation instead of unilateral action. Officials say both governments have already improved intelligence coordination this year to target trafficking networks.
Economic talks also include Brazil’s vast rare earth reserves , among the largest globally, with Washington seeking secure supply chains and Brasília insisting on domestic industrialisation and value-added production .
The meeting occurs amid domestic political pressure on Lula ahead of elections . Lula said, “I don’t know if this will help,” reflecting cautious expectations. Finance Minister Dario Durigan said the goal is constructive dialogue and protecting Brazil’s interests.
Despite tensions, both leaders signalled willingness to continue negotiations, with analysts noting unresolved disagreements over trade enforcement and regulatory scrutiny , but shared interest in avoiding escalation. Officials also pointed to lingering sensitivities linked to former president Jair Bolsonaro , alongside efforts to balance trade, security cooperation, and long-term investment frameworks between both countries.
