Tension and chaos gripped the government-run Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday after the death of an 11-year-old boy triggered protests by family members who alleged medical negligence and administration of a wrong injection .

According to officials, police personnel were deployed at the hospital mortuary as relatives of the boy, a resident of Kalupada in Khurda district , staged a demonstration demanding accountability for the child’s death.

The boy had been brought to the casualty ward around 9.30 am after he sustained injuries when he fell from a bicycle , family members said. His elder sister claimed that he was conscious and speaking normally when they reached the hospital.

“He was talking to us and even asked for water before treatment . The doctor gave him an injection, and after some time we were told that he had died,” she alleged, claiming that the injection caused his sudden death .

The child’s body was later sent for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death , but the move triggered further anger among relatives. The family alleged that they were not allowed to complete required formalities before the body was taken for the autopsy.

Police officials said they rushed to the hospital to control the situation as the protest continued near the mortuary. Authorities said the exact cause of death will be determined only after the post-mortem report , which may also guide further inquiry into the allegations of negligence.

Meanwhile, hospital authorities had not issued any official clarification regarding the allegations at the time of reporting.
