Boost for Telangana Bureaucracy: IAS Cadre Expanded to 218 Positions
Keeping in mind the growing administrative needs in Telangana, the central government has taken a key decision. The Centre has issued a revised notification increasing the official strength of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Telangana cadre from 208 to 218 posts . These changes have been made under the Indian Administrative Service (Cadre Strength Determination) Amendment Rules – 2026 , and the decision was taken after consultations with the Telangana government, the Centre stated. According to the revised rules, the number of senior duty posts in the Telangana government has been fixed at 119 .
The distribution of posts in the cadre is as follows:
• Central Deputation Reserve – 47 posts
• State Deputation Reserve – 29 posts
• Training Reserve – 4 posts
• Leave Reserve & Junior Posts Reserve – 19 posts
Out of the total 218 IAS posts , 66 posts will be filled through promotions under Rule 8 of the IAS (Recruitment) Rules – 1954 , and 152 posts will be filled through direct recruitment, the notification stated.
The revised rules came into effect from January 9 of this year, clarified the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions. The notification noted that these amendments were made by exercising the powers of the central government under the All India Services Act – 1951 and IAS Cadre Rules – 1954 . The new rules have been titled the Indian Administrative Service (Cadre Strength Determination) Amendment Rules – 2026 .
Officials stated that the increase in IAS cadre strength is necessary to effectively manage the growing administrative workload, development programs, and implementation of government policies in Telangana. Strengthening administration is the primary objective of this decision, the Centre emphasized.
