Body of missing Tripura tourist found in Nagaland’s Dzukou Valley after month-long search
The body of 22-year-old tourist Pranab Das , who went missing in Nagaland’s Dzukou Valley in early January, was recovered on Saturday, police confirmed on Sunday. Das, a resident of Malaynagar in West Tripura district , had booked an entry ticket to the valley from the Viswema entry point on January 4 but did not return.
Das had arrived in Kohima on January 2 and stayed at a homestay in Lerie Colony , officials said. “He was last seen leaving the homestay on January 4 morning. When he did not return, the family reported him missing on January 6,” said Anupama Kikon, Officer-in-Charge, South Police Station, Kohima .
In response, authorities, local organisations and volunteers launched extensive search operations across the challenging terrain. “We coordinated with the Southern Angami Youth Organisation, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, and local guides. Drones and ground patrols were deployed to locate him,” said Kohima District Superintendent of Police, T. John Bosco .
On February 6, a body was spotted on the riverbank near the Dzukou Valley helipad , and a joint team reached the location early on Saturday. “We have recovered the body and confirmed the identity through personal belongings, including his entry ticket, two mobile phones, and a wallet containing identification documents and cash,” said SP Bosco .
An inquest was conducted at the site in the presence of Kohima district administration officials and independent witnesses. “Based on preliminary observations at the scene, there is no indication of foul play. However, we are awaiting further investigations and post-mortem reports,” the officer added.
Das’s family, informed of the recovery, expressed their grief. “We are devastated to hear about Pranab. We will arrive in Kohima to complete formalities for the post-mortem,” said Ramesh Das, Pranab’s father .
Dzukou Valley, which straddles the Nagaland-Manipur border, is known for its rolling hills, pristine streams, and the rare Dzukou Lily . Authorities have frequently warned trekkers about the rugged terrain and sudden weather changes . “We urge all visitors to follow safety protocols. While the valley is beautiful, it is also challenging and unpredictable,” said local trekking guide, Achumi Jamir .
