BJP’s Rathindra Bose Elected West Bengal Speaker, First from North Bengal Since Independence
Senior BJP MLA Rathindra Bose was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly on Friday, marking a historic moment as he became the first legislator from North Bengal to hold the constitutional post since Independence.
The election took place smoothly in the newly constituted 18th West Bengal Assembly , where Bose’s elevation had been widely anticipated following the BJP’s decisive majority in the recent polls.
His name was formally proposed in the House by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari , after which pro tem Speaker Tapas Roy conducted a voice vote. The pro tem Speaker then declared Bose elected, as all 207 BJP MLAs extended their support unanimously. The ruling party holds a strong majority in the 294 member House , making the outcome effectively a formality.
The opposition TMC chose not to field a candidate , clearing the way for an uncontested election and a smooth transition to the Speaker’s chair.
Announcing the candidature a day earlier, Suvendu Adhikari had expressed confidence that Bose would be elected unanimously. With no rival nominee in the fray, Bose’s selection reflected both numerical strength and political consensus within the Assembly proceedings.
Bose, who represents Cooch Behar Dakshin constituency , won the recent election by a margin of over 23,000 votes , defeating TMC candidate Abhijit De Bhowmik. A chartered accountant by profession , he was long associated with the RSS before formally entering electoral politics.
His election is being seen as significant not just within parliamentary procedure but also in terms of regional representation. Bose has become the first MLA from North Bengal in post Independence history to occupy the Speaker’s chair, a development widely viewed as a strategic signal by the BJP towards strengthening its presence in the region, which has emerged as one of its strong political bases over the last decade.
After his election, Bose thanked the House and said he would carry out his responsibilities with sincerity, adding that he would seek guidance from experienced legislators whenever needed. He also emphasized working in the spirit of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” , underlining a commitment to inclusive functioning of the Assembly.
Traditionally, the Speaker’s post in West Bengal has been held by experienced legislators, often with legal backgrounds. In earlier regimes, veteran leaders such as Biman Banerjee under the TMC government, and Syed Abdul Mansur Habibullah and Hashim Abdul Halim during the Left Front era, had occupied the chair.
Political observers note that Bose’s appointment reflects a blend of administrative choice and political messaging, highlighting both BJP’s numerical dominance in the Assembly and its effort to elevate emerging leaders while balancing regional aspirations within the state’s evolving political landscape.
