BJP’s quiet struggle, can the party bounce back in T’gana?

The BJP in Telangana appears to be largely inactive at the moment. After G. Ramachandra Rao took charge as the state party president, there was some initial activity, but since then, the party operations have slowed significantly. Despite announcing preparations for the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election, the BJP shows little visible enthusiasm. Meanwhile, BRS and Congress have already started organizing campaigns and strategizing, leaving the BJP falling behind.

Internal conflicts Since Ramachandra Rao became Telangana BJP chief, collective leadership within the party has weakened. Coordination among senior leaders is lacking, exposing internal divisions. Even in selecting a candidate for the Jubilee Hills by-election, the party could not reach a consensus. Some senior leaders’ refusal to cooperate has further blocked progress.

Another complicating factor is Rajasingh, whose frequent clashes with the party have caused troubles for BJP leadership. Although suspended, he continues to publicly challenge the state leadership, threatening to resign from his MLA post if central minister Kishan Reddy resigns. Rajasingh has openly criticized the party, claiming he has received support from senior central leaders and even hinted that he may disclose state-level issues to them. His actions have created confusion and uncertainty among local BJP leaders and workers.

Earlier conflicts during zonal president elections also contributed to internal tensions.The leadership’s favoritism caused internal frustration, and now most party members just go along with the dominant group. As a result, enthusiasm within the party remains low.

Financial limitations Conducting party activities requires funds. The BJP in Telangana faces a shortage of financial resources, making it difficult to organize campaigns, meetings, or rallies. Compared to other parties, the BJP’s limited funding has weakened its energy and outreach efforts.

Strategic weaknesses Winning the Jubilee Hills by-election demands a strong strategy, but BJP has so far failed to develop a clear plan. While BRS and Congress have mobilized their ground networks, conducting door-to-door campaigns and divisional meetings, BJP remains in preliminary stages. A strong candidate has yet to emerge, and no visible campaign is underway.

BRS has announced Sunitha, the widow of the late Gopinath, as its candidate, aiming to attract sympathy votes and strengthen support. Meanwhile, Congress is carefully choosing its candidate and planning strategies to win voter support, even sidelining former contenders such as ex-cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin for tactical reasons. In contrast, BJP has not announced any candidate, leaving the field open.

Declining support BJP’s past influence in Telangana has faded. During Bandi Sanjay’s tenure as state president, the party enjoyed significant success, including winning 46 seats in municipal elections. But his removal disappointed many workers, and the energy seen during that period is now largely absent. With Kishan Reddy handling responsibilities as central minister and state president, BJP has struggled to maintain an active presence.

Even after Ramachandra Rao’s election as state president, initial momentum seems to have faded. Weak local leadership and lack of consistent advocacy on public issues have reduced trust in the party among voters.

Lack of central support Telangana BJP leaders also complain about insufficient support from the central leadership, both strategically and financially. Media outreach, critical for public engagement, remains limited. While other parties leverage social media and mainstream media effectively, BJP in Telangana has lagged behind.
