BJP’s Annamalai steps down from poll duty, cites father’s health, but Questions Linger

Former Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai has decided to step down from his role as election in-charge for six Assembly constituencies in the upcoming Tamil Nadu polls, citing his father’s critical health condition.

Speaking to the media on February 3, Annamalai said he had informed the party leadership about his decision. “I have requested the leadership, including TN BJP President Nainar Nagendran , to relieve me from these responsibilities. My father is undergoing dialysis, and being with him is my foremost duty. I will not be able to travel this time, and I hope the party will reassign these constituencies to others,” he said.

Annamalai had been appointed as the election in-charge for Singanallur, Virugambakkam (Chennai), Karaikudi, Srivaikuntam, Madurai South, and Padmanabhapuram (Kanniyakumari) constituencies.

Political analysts suggest that Annamalai’s withdrawal could have an impact on BJP’s campaign strategy in these key constituencies, as he was seen as a dynamic and energetic face for the party. “His absence will require the party to quickly find leaders who can match his ground-level connect and organisational skills,” noted a senior political commentator.

The BJP leadership is yet to announce the reassignment of these constituencies ahead of the polls.
