BJP To Hold Oath Ceremony In Kolkata On May 9, Top Leaders Likely To Attend
The BJP has announced that its proposed oath-taking ceremony for forming government in West Bengal will be held on May 9 at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata , as the party prepares to assume power following its claim of a historic electoral mandate.
State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said the ceremony will begin at 10 am and preparations are underway. The event is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi , Union Home Minister Amit Shah , senior BJP leaders and Union ministers, party sources said.
A meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs has been scheduled for May 8 evening to decide the legislative leadership and select the Chief Minister. While the BJP has not officially announced its Chief Ministerial face, key contenders reportedly include state president Samik Bhattacharya, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, and senior leader Dilip Ghosh. However, no formal decision has been declared yet, and the final choice will be made by the party’s central leadership in consultation with the newly elected legislators.
According to party leaders, the BJP has secured a landslide mandate in the recently concluded assembly elections , marking what they describe as the end of a 15-year rule by the Trinamool Congress. However, detailed official constituency-wise confirmation and final certified figures from the Election Commission have not been publicly consolidated in the report.
Significantly, the ceremony will be held on the 25th day of Baisakh , which coincides with Rabindra Jayanti , the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore , adding cultural symbolism to the political event.
Party leaders view the timing as an attempt to connect the new government formation with Bengal’s cultural identity and intellectual heritage.
The announcement marks a crucial political development, with the BJP positioning itself for its first government formation in West Bengal after years of organisational expansion and electoral mobilisation.
