BJP MPs Formulate Special Strategy for GHMC, Local Body Elections in Telangana

Telangana BJP MPs have resolved to work collectively to strengthen the party’s presence in the state and adopt a focused strategy to secure victories in upcoming local elections, including the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), municipalities, and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs).

The decision follows reports that Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s performance in Telangana during a meeting with BJP MPs from southern states last week. Sources said Modi highlighted that while BJP had historic successes in Telangana including a parliamentary win in 1984 the state leadership had failed to consolidate gains, allowing Congress to maintain dominance. The Prime Minister reportedly emphasized that the BJP has yet to establish itself as the principal opposition party after the 2023 assembly election loss.

The meeting of Telangana MPs was held at the residence of Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy in Delhi on Thursday night. It was attended by Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar, and MPs Eatala Rajender, D K Aruna, Aravind Dharmapuri, M Raghunandan Rao, Konda Vishweshwar Reddy, Godam Nagesh, and R Krishnaiah. Discussions focused on strategies to take central government schemes to the public and work under the guidance of state BJP president N Ramchander Rao.

BJP’s recent local election performance has raised concerns. The party lost deposits in the Jubilee Hills assembly bypoll and was defeated in the Secunderabad Cantonment by-election in 2024, despite winning eight of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana during the 2024 general elections. Analysts say the contrast between parliamentary success and weak performance in local bodies reflects the party’s limited grassroots presence in the state.

The Telangana MPs resolved to adopt a “special strategy” for upcoming elections, aiming to consolidate organizational strength, boost voter outreach, and regain ground at municipal and rural levels. Party sources said the initiative reflects a concerted effort to align state-level activities with central leadership expectations and ensure BJP emerges as a credible alternative to the ruling Congress.
