BJP emerges dominant force in Maharashtra civic polls, wins 1,425 seats

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the dominant force in the 2026 Maharashtra civic polls, winning 1,425 of the 2,869 seats across 29 municipal corporations. The party broke decades-long strongholds of regional heavyweights, becoming the single largest party in major cities including Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

In the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the BJP bagged 89 seats, ending the Thackeray family’s three-decade dominance in the cash-rich civic body. Its ally, Shiv Sena, won 29 seats, while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) secured 65. Other parties, including MNS (6), Congress with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (24), AIMIM (8), and NCP (3), had limited influence in the civic body.

In Pune, historically an NCP stronghold, the BJP stunned its rivals by winning 119 seats, leaving the Ajit Pawar-led NCP with just 27, its ally NCP (SP) with 3, and the Congress with 15. The BJP also held sway in Nagpur, bagging 102 of the 151 seats, and made significant gains in Nashik, where it won 72 seats . In addition, the party emerged as the largest in smaller municipal corporations including Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli, Mira-Bhayandar, Panvel, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Nanded, signalling its growing influence beyond major cities.

While the BJP consolidated its dominance, Congress managed localized victories in Bhiwandi, Chandrapur, and Latur, and AIMIM strengthened its presence in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with 33 seats, reflecting pockets of community-specific support. The final tally across the 29 municipal corporations showed the BJP at 1,425, Shiv Sena 399, Congress 324, NCP 167, Shiv Sena (UBT) 155, NCP (SP) 36, MNS 13, BSP 6, other registered parties 129, unrecognised parties 196, and independents 19.

The BJP’s sweeping victory is expected to reshape governance in Maharashtra, enabling faster decision-making and implementation of development projects, including urban infrastructure, housing, sanitation, and smart city initiatives, often in coordination with the central government. Politically, the results give the BJP a strong narrative to project effective governance, weaken regional rivals, and strengthen its grassroots network ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Analysts say the results reflect a voter preference for development-oriented governance and political stability, marking a major realignment in Maharashtra’s urban political landscape.
