The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday demanded the arrest of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and registration of a case against him for an allegedly provocative statement made during an election rally in Assam . In a complaint to Karnataka Director General of Police M A Saleem , BJP leaders also sought adequate security for BJP and RSS workers , saying Kharge’s remarks could endanger their lives.

The BJP alleged that while campaigning in Nilambazar, Karimganj district , on April 6, Kharge compared the RSS and BJP to a poisonous snake and referred to a purported Quranic analogy , stating that if a poisonous snake is seen during namaz , one should stop the prayer and kill it. He reportedly added that “ RSS/BJP are like that poisonous snake; if you do not kill it, you will not survive .” The party claimed that the statement justified violence and could potentially incite extremist elements against its members.

In their letter, BJP leaders said the remarks were particularly concerning as Kharge, being the head of a national party , holds a highly responsible position and is seen as someone who consistently engages with minority communities. They described the comments as an irresponsible and provocative statement that poses a threat to the lives of lakhs of BJP and RSS workers nationwide and represents a direct attack on the Sangh Parivar .

The complaint also reminded the DGP of the Supreme Court directive obligating police to take suo motu action in cases of potential incitement to violence, without waiting for formal complaints. The BJP demanded that immediate measures be taken to protect its workers and maintain public peace. Complaints have also been filed in Guwahati and with the Election Commission of India , intensifying the controversy.

Senior BJP leaders condemned Kharge’s statements, calling them provocative and divisive, and warned that such remarks could have nationwide repercussions . The Congress has not yet issued a detailed official response to the BJP’s demands.
