BJP Alleges 12 Years of Urban Decline Under BRS - Congress Rule in Telangana
Telangana BJP President N. Ramchander Rao on Thursday released a PowerPoint report alleging that a decade of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) rule followed by two years of Congress governance has led to what he termed the “erosion” of urban Telangana, leaving municipal bodies burdened with debt, corruption, and administrative decline. The presentation, titled “12 Years of Erosion of Urban Telangana (BRS & INC Legacy)”, was unveiled at Kashish Function Hall in Musheerabad in the presence of Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy , BJP MPs, MLCs, Maharashtra Minister and Telangana BJP municipal polls in-charge Ashish Shelar, and other senior leaders.
Rao cited figures from the presentation claiming that 123 municipalities together carry debts of around ₹3,600 crore , while the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) alone has liabilities nearing ₹5,000 crore . He argued that borrowings increased without visible civic improvements, alleging that urban local bodies were run through “commissions and exploitation” rather than development. The BJP leader further claimed that about 1,500 officials were caught in bribery cases but faced inadequate action, describing it as a failure of anti-corruption systems.
Targeting the Congress government, Rao alleged that pre-poll “six guarantees” were not implemented and that nearly ₹80,000 crore in fresh borrowings were added within a year, deepening fiscal stress. He referred to delays in retirement benefits for employees and raised concerns over crime rates, unemployment, suicides among sections of workers, doctor shortages in government hospitals, and pressures on education infrastructure, saying these reflected wider governance challenges in cities.
The presentation also mentioned alleged irregularities linked to land-use decisions under GO No. 27, Musi river beautification works, and contract commissions, alongside claims of potential tax and user-charge hikes. Rao criticised political defections from BRS to Congress, saying they undermine the public mandate. Highlighting central support, he said Telangana benefited from schemes such as PM SVANidhi , Mudra Yojana , Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana , and the AMRUT Mission , along with highway and railway investments. Framing the upcoming municipal elections as a choice between “development and transparency” versus “debt and commissions,” Rao appealed to voters to support BJP candidates under the slogan “Save Telangana – Vote for BJP.”
