Bitcoin hits $125K
Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency by market value, reached a new record high on Sunday, trading at $125,245.57, up nearly 2.7% at 0512 GMT. This surge surpasses its previous peak of $124,480 set in mid-August and underscores a significant inflection point in the asset's history.

The blistering rally is fueled by a convergence of macroeconomic anxiety and favorable U.S. policy changes that have unlocked substantial institutional capital.
Institutional onslaught and regulatory clarity
The primary driver is the accelerating institutional adoption, largely channeled through Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs). The success of these regulated products provides an essential gateway for major financial entities, with analysts estimating that modest portfolio allocations from pension and 401(k) plans could generate trillions in new demand, signaling significant future price support.
This institutional push was given a green light by the new regulatory stance under President Donald Trump’s administration. The government has signaled a move toward a clear regulatory framework, notably by establishing an SEC Crypto Task Force and reversing the controversial Staff Accounting Bulletin 121 (SAB 121). This reversal, which previously forced banks to hold customer crypto assets on their balance sheets, dramatically reduces risk for traditional financial institutions and is expected to unlock bank participation in the custody space.
The "Digital Gold" narrative
Bitcoin's climb for an eighth straight session was also bolstered by broader financial trends. The weakening U.S. dollar, which is posting multi-week losses against major currencies due to concerns over a potential government shutdown and delays in key economic data releases, has reinforced Bitcoin’s appeal as a safe-haven asset.
Market participants are increasingly viewing the cryptocurrency as a "debasement trade," pushing money into scarce, non-sovereign assets during periods of fiat currency instability and political turmoil. This dynamic, coupled with recent gains in U.S. equities, has propelled the digital asset.
The record price reflects Bitcoin's transformation from a speculative investment to a mainstream financial heavyweight. The rally pushed Bitcoin’s market capitalization past $2.4 trillion this week, causing it to briefly surpass Amazon and become the world's seventh most valuable asset. As the regulatory landscape solidifies and institutional gates open wider, Bitcoin’s performance remains a crucial focal point at the intersection of digital and traditional financial markets.
