Bipartisan tributes mark Dr. Manmohan Singh’s 93rd birth anniversary

India paid homage to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on his 93rd birth anniversary on Friday, with leaders across party lines recalling his immense contributions to the nation’s economic transformation and social welfare.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and senior leader Rahul Gandhi were among those who praised Singh’s vision and integrity. They credited him with steering the country through the landmark 1991 liberalization reforms and later launching initiatives like MGNREGA and the Right to Education Act that reshaped India’s development journey.

To mark the occasion, the Congress party inaugurated the Dr. Manmohan Singh Research Centre and Library at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi. The centre, inaugurated in the presence of Sonia Gandhi, Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Singh’s widow Gursharan Kaur, will house his archives and foster research on his policy legacy.

Singh, who served as finance minister during the 1991 reforms and later as prime minister from 2004 to 2014, presided over a decade of GDP growth averaging over 8% while also expanding social security and welfare programs that touched millions of lives.

Tributes on social media echoed the same theme of selfless service. One post, quoting Leo Tolstoy — “Joy can only be real if people look upon their life as a service and have a definite object in life outside themselves and their personal happiness” — described Singh’s journey as “a life full of service, sacrifice and selflessness,” calling him “a pure Ratna of our Bharath.”

The sentiment was widely shared across political and public platforms, with many suggesting that Singh’s unmatched contribution to India’s economic and social progress makes him deserving of the country’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna.
