A renewed effort is underway to determine the causes of chronic kidney disease in the Uddanam region, with authorities initiating a focused study backed by expert teams and upgraded infrastructure. A modern laboratory has been established at King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam to analyse samples using advanced technology.

Researchers are collecting blood and urine samples from residents, with biomarker-based testing being introduced to identify individuals at risk even before symptoms develop. A structured questionnaire is also being used to gather key details on health conditions and lifestyle factors.

The research team recently updated State Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav on the progress. He instructed officials to expedite the study and ensure it benefits affected communities.

The project, originally launched during 2014 to 2019 with support from Australia’s George Institute, had stalled in the past but has now resumed. To strengthen the initiative, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has sanctioned ₹6.2 crore for a three-year study.

The research is being carried out under the guidance of senior nephrologist Prof. T. Raviraj, with Dr. G. Prasad of Andhra Medical College serving as the principal investigator. So far, around 1,500 samples have been collected and are being analysed at the KGH laboratory after initial storage in Palasa.

The lab has been upgraded with advanced diagnostic equipment worth nearly ₹80 lakh , ensuring precise and efficient testing as per ICMR standards.

Experts say biomarker testing can help detect risks early and assess the chances and severity of kidney disease in the coming years. The study will also include genetic analysis through RNA sequencing to gain deeper insights.

Officials said the research is progressing as planned and is expected to provide a clearer understanding of the disease, paving the way for early intervention and better healthcare outcomes in the region.
