A biker was detained by the Delhi Police after he allegedly performed a series of dangerous motorcycle stunts on a busy road in central Delhi to celebrate the Indian cricket team’s victory over Pakistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup, officials said on Tuesday.

The incident took place around 11.30 pm on February 15 on Bada Bazar Road in Old Rajender Nagar, a densely populated residential and commercial area with regular late-night traffic. According to police, the rider was seen speeding through the stretch, swerving abruptly between lanes, revving the engine loudly and repeatedly lifting the front wheel of the motorcycle, leaving it momentarily balanced on a single wheel. Witnesses said the biker also made sudden sharp turns and accelerated without warning, forcing pedestrians and other motorists to move aside to avoid being hit.

Police added that the rider was not wearing a helmet and appeared completely unaware of the risks posed to himself and others on the road. His actions, they said, created panic among commuters and residents, some of whom feared an imminent accident.

The rider was later identified as Mohit Sharma , a resident of Old Rajender Nagar. Acting on information about rash and negligent driving, police teams rushed to the spot and apprehended Sharma along with his motorcycle, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central District) Anant Mittal said.

During questioning, Sharma told police that he was performing the stunts out of excitement after India’s victory over Pakistan. “In his enthusiasm, he rode the motorcycle on a public road without any regard for the safety of pedestrians and other road users,” the DCP said.

As the biker was stopped, a large crowd of angry commuters and local residents gathered at the spot. Several people allegedly shouted at him, accusing him of risking lives, and a few attempted to physically assault him. The situation quickly turned tense, with police sensing the possibility of mob violence.

Police personnel immediately formed a protective cordon around the rider, restrained aggressive individuals, and dispersed the crowd to prevent the situation from escalating. Sharma was then safely escorted away from the area.

Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 , police booked him for rash and negligent driving, dangerous riding and riding without a helmet, offences that attract fines, possible licence suspensio n and even imprisonment in serious cases. The Delhi Police said further action, including seizure of the motorcycle and prosecution, will follow as per law.
