Bihar Govt Makes National Song, Anthem Mandatory In Educational Institutions
The Bihar government has made it mandatory for all educational institutions to begin the day with the national song , followed by the national anthem , in a move aimed at promoting discipline, patriotism and respect for national symbols.
As per a directive issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) on April 26, schools and colleges across the state will have to strictly follow this sequence during morning assemblies. The order also extends to all government programmes , where events must begin with the national song and conclude with the Bihar state song .
The communication has been addressed to senior officials including additional chief secretaries, principal secretaries, department heads, divisional commissioners, district magistrates and the DGP, directing them to ensure strict compliance across institutions.
Officials said the objective of the order is to instill a sense of national pride, discipline and cultural awareness among students and government functionaries. The state government has also emphasised uniform implementation across administrative and educational bodies.
However, the decision has sparked mixed political reactions .
Supporters of the ruling side have welcomed the move, describing it as a step towards strengthening national values in education and promoting respect for constitutional ideals among the youth.
On the other hand, opposition parties have criticised the directive, arguing that it may lead to over-formalisation of school routines and reduce time for academic activities. Some leaders have also questioned whether making such practices compulsory is appropriate in educational spaces.
The decision has further triggered a wider debate on the role of national symbols in schools , with differing views on whether such measures promote unity or impose unnecessary ceremonial obligations. The order is expected to be implemented soon across Bihar’s educational institutions and government offices.
