Bihar government promotes women self-employment with Rs 1,000 cr disbursement

In a major push to promote women’s entrepreneurship, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday disbursed Rs 1,000 crore to 10 lakh beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana. The scheme, designed to empower women through self-employment, provides financial assistance directly into the bank accounts of recipients.

Kumar, who recently secured a record fifth consecutive term, handed over Rs 10,000 to each beneficiary via the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system from his official residence. The event was attended by cabinet colleagues and senior officials.

Speaking to reporters, Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar said the initiative has so far benefited 1.56 crore women across the state. “The funds are intended to support women in starting or expanding small businesses. Those who successfully utilize the money for self-employment will become eligible for further assistance of Rs 2 lakh each,” he said.

Launched in September, the scheme gained attention when Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually attended its inauguration. The distribution of funds continued even after the assembly elections were announced, drawing criticism from opposition parties who accused the government of using the scheme to influence voters. Analysts say the scheme appeared to have a significant impact at the polls, as women turned out in large numbers, helping the ruling NDA secure a decisive majority.

Addressing complaints from women who have not yet received the assistance, Minister Shravan Kumar clarified that registration with a Jeevika self-help group is mandatory to qualify for the scheme. “Those who have not registered are being guided to complete the process and will soon receive the benefits,” he said.

The minister also responded to allegations of corruption, stating that opposition parties like RJD and Jan Suraaj Party themselves demanded bribes of up to Rs 20,000 from applicants. “The government is committed to transparency, and any reports of irregularities are being thoroughly investigated,” he added.

The Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana remains a flagship program aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs, providing them not only financial support but also opportunities to enhance their skills and contribute to Bihar’s growing economy.
