Bihar Flood Crisis Deepens, 46.88 Lakh People Hit Across 15 Districts

Bihar's flood situation remained critical on Friday as nearly 46.88 lakh people across 15 districts were affected, while breaches at two embankment locations in Bhagalpur added to the challenges faced by authorities.

The number of affected people has risen from the earlier estimate of around 44 lakh across 14 districts. The Ganga and several major rivers continue to remain above their danger levels at various points, inundating large areas and disrupting normal life.

Bhagalpur has emerged as one of the worst-hit districts. Two embankment breaches were reported there, prompting authorities to intensify efforts to strengthen vulnerable stretches and protect nearby settlements.

The flooding has followed sustained rainfall in parts of Bihar and heavy precipitation in river catchment areas of Nepal. Rising water levels in the Ganga and its tributaries have aggravated the situation across several districts.

The latest flood episode has occurred despite Bihar recording 27 per cent below-normal rainfall between June 1 and September 8, according to weather data. The Ganga has also reached unusually high levels at several locations, including Patna and Bhagalpur.

Five people, including four members of one family, drowned in floodwaters in Bhagalpur's Koili Khutaha village on Thursday. Officials said the victims were attempting to rescue a person who had fallen into deep water.

Relief operations remain underway across the affected areas. Community kitchens, relief camps and boats are being used to provide food, shelter and assistance, while SDRF and NDRF personnel have been deployed for rescue and evacuation.

The weather office has forecast more rain in parts of Bihar over the next two days, raising concerns about further rises in river levels.

Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav visited flood-hit areas of Raghopur in Vaishali and criticised the state government over its handling of the crisis.

Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions.
