Bihar Dy CM Samrat Choudhary set to become state’s first BJP CM after NDA nod
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday resigned from his post after recommending dissolution of the council of ministers, paving the way for Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary to take over as the next chief minister.
Kumar reached Lok Bhavan to submit his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain, accompanied by Choudhary, JD(U) leader Sanjay Jha and minister Vijay Choudhary. Earlier, the cabinet had met and recommended its dissolution, a constitutional requirement before stepping down.
Soon after Kumar’s resignation, Choudhary was elected leader of the NDA legislative party, clearing the way for him to become the first Chief Minister from the BJP in Bihar .
The decision followed a two-step process within the ruling alliance. Choudhary was first chosen as leader of the BJP legislature party, a significant step given that the Bharatiya Janata Party is the single largest party in the 243-member Assembly with 89 MLAs. He was then unanimously elected leader of the NDA legislative party , formalising his candidature.
Union Minister Nityanand Rai announced the decision after a meeting attended by MLAs of all alliance partners.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes parties like the Janata Dal (United), played a key role by extending collective endorsement and ensuring majority support in the Assembly, lending both legitimacy and stability to the transition.
Senior BJP leaders, including state president Nitin Nabin, had met Kumar before he left to submit his resignation.
With BJP’s numerical dominance and NDA’s unanimous backing, Choudhary’s elevation reflects a consensus-driven transition within the coalition. He is expected to take oath as Chief Minister today .
