Bihar CM Nitish Kumar to Be Elected JD(U) President Unopposed

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to be elected Janata Dal (United) president unopposed on Tuesday, as no other candidate filed nominations for the party’s top post. The deadline for withdrawal of nominations ended at 11 am, and since only Nitish Kumar’s nomination was filed, Aneel Prasad Hegde , the returning officer, will issue the certificate of election at 2:30 pm, party sources said. Senior leaders including Sanjay Kumar Jha , Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh and Bihar minister Shrawan Kumar are expected to attend the occasion. Kumar had taken over the reins of JD(U) ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls after Rajiv Ranjan Singh stepped down in December 2023.

Nitish Kumar has also been elected to the Rajya Sabha , signalling his move to the centre , while the post of Bihar Chief Minister is expected to be taken over by a senior BJP leader , marking a major leadership transition in the state.

In a notable development for the party’s future, his son, Nishant Kumar , has formally entered active politics by joining the JD(U) in March 2026. Born on 20 July 1981, Nishant is an engineering graduate and had largely stayed away from public life until now. His entry marks a shift in the party’s approach toward next-generation leadership . Party workers welcomed him at the JD(U) headquarters in Patna, highlighting his commitment to strengthening the organisation. Observers note that Nishant is being positioned as a future leader , gradually building a public profile and political base while reflecting the legacy of his father’s long tenure.

While no formal government position has been declared for Nishant, he has already begun engaging in political outreach, signalling the start of his journey in mainstream politics. With Nitish Kumar moving to the centre and his son stepping into active politics, the JD(U) appears to be balancing experience and generational transition ahead of upcoming elections and broader organisational planning.
