Bihar Allots 10 Acres in Patna for Grand Sri Venkateswara Temple
The Bihar government has taken a significant step in expanding Sri Venkateswara Swamy’s devotional presence across India by officially allotting 10.11 acres of land in Patna’s Mokama Khas area for the construction of a new Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) temple. The land, situated near key road and rail networks and close to the Ganga river, has been granted to TTD on a 99-year token lease of just one rupee, reflecting the state’s special interest in promoting spiritual tourism. Bihar Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit, IAS, conveyed the formal approval to TTD Chairman B.R. Naidu, marking the first time a TTD temple will be established in Bihar. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh congratulated the Bihar government, noting that the Patna temple will become a major spiritual hub for millions of devotees across northern India.
This initiative aligns with TTD’s larger nationwide mission to build at least one Sri Venkateswara temple in every Indian state, following successful projects in Delhi, Jammu, Mumbai, Rishikesh, Chennai, Hyderabad, and several other cities. The Patna project is expected to serve devotees from Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and eastern Uttar Pradesh who find it difficult to travel to Tirumala. Discussions between TTD and Bihar officials over recent months have progressed positively, leading to the decision to appoint the Director of the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation as the nodal officer for further coordination. A TTD delegation will soon meet him to initiate the next steps, including detailed land surveys, architectural designs, preparation of the detailed project report, and phased construction planning.
Beyond the spiritual dimension, the project fits into Bihar’s broader strategy to develop a robust religious-tourism corridor, which already includes projects related to Sita’s birthplace at Punaura Dham, Buddhist heritage sites in Vaishali, and the Vishnupad temple in Gaya. Political leaders in the state have also highlighted this temple as part of Bihar’s cultural revival efforts. With Mokama serving as a major junction town connected by national highways and railway lines, the temple is expected to stimulate local economic activity, generate employment, and improve infrastructure through enhanced roads, lighting, and tourism facilities. TTD Chairman B.R. Naidu expressed gratitude to the Bihar government, stating that the temple will become a spiritual anchor for northern devotees and strengthen cultural ties between Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. Once completed, the Patna Sri Venkateswara Temple is poised to transform the region into a major pilgrimage destination, bringing both devotional and developmental benefits to the surrounding areas.
