Big Blow Before CWG! India's Weightlifting Quota Slashed After Doping Scandal
India's Commonwealth Games weightlifting campaign has suffered a significant setback after the country's quota was reduced from 16 to 11 lifters because of multiple Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) during the qualification period. The decision has also resulted in Dilbagh Singh being withdrawn from the final Indian contingent.
The Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) had initially announced a 12-member squad for the Games, led by Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu. However, federation officials were informed only on Wednesday that India's quota had been reduced to 11 athletes, leaving them with no option but to trim the squad.
According to federation sources, Dilbagh Singh was withdrawn after it was found that he had not trained during the preparatory camp in Birmingham because of a persistent back injury. Considering his fitness concerns, the federation decided to leave him out of the final team following the quota reduction.
India's reduced quota comes as a consequence of multiple doping violations recorded during the qualification period. N Ajith (71kg), Sairaj Pardeshi (88kg) and Harcharan Singh (110kg) were banned for doping offences ahead of the Commonwealth Games. In addition, Vanshita Verma (86kg) was sanctioned for violating anti-doping regulations, contributing to the country's overall tally of Anti-Doping Rule Violations.
The latest development is another blow for Indian weightlifting, a sport that has repeatedly come under the scanner due to recurring doping cases. The quota cut not only reduces India's representation at the Games but also impacts the country's medal prospects in an event where it has traditionally been one of the strongest contenders.
Despite the setback, the Indian team will bank on experienced campaigners, especially Mirabai Chanu, to lead the challenge in Glasgow and help India maintain its strong record in Commonwealth Games weightlifting.
