Bhopal gas tragedy site cleared, MP CM Mohan Yadav plans memorial

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Saturday announced plans to build a memorial for the victims of the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy on the site of the former Union Carbide factory in Arif Nagar, which was recently cleared of hazardous waste. Yadav became the first state chief minister to inspect the core factory site without wearing a safety mask, emphasizing the government’s commitment to development while honoring the victims.

The Bhopal Gas Tragedy, considered the world’s worst industrial disaster , occurred on the night of December 2‑3, 1984, when methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide plant , exposing over 500,000 people to the toxic fumes. Immediate deaths were estimated at around 3,800 , with subsequent fatalities pushing the official toll to more than 5,400 , while independent studies suggest tens of thousands of people eventually died due to gas-related illnesses. Hundreds of thousands suffered permanent disabilities , chronic respiratory problems, eye damage, neurological disorders, and other long-term health complications, leaving generations of families affected.

Speaking during his visit, Yadav said the memorial will be built after consulting all sections of society and under the guidance of the Madhya Pradesh High Court . “By involving survivors, community representatives, and experts, we will proceed to construct a fitting tribute for those who lost their lives and suffered in this tragedy,” he said. “The state government stands with all gas victims at every step and will spare no effort for their welfare.”

The toxic chemical waste from the factory had remained at the site for nearly four decades. Under strict High Court supervision, nearly 377 tonnes of hazardous waste were safely packed and transported to a disposal facility in Pithampur, Dhar district , without causing environmental or human harm. Yadav highlighted that this operation demonstrates how modern scientific methods can safely dispose of chemical waste.

The CM criticized past governments for their negligence, noting that the Union Carbide plant was abandoned without proper cleanup, leaving the site contaminated for decades. He also condemned the role of the former administration in helping Warren Anderson, the then CEO of Union Carbide, escape accountability , calling on Rahul Gandhi to apologize for his family’s political legacy connected to the tragedy.

Beyond the memorial, Yadav discussed plans for developing the surrounding area, including integrating it into the Bhopal Metropolitan Area to promote urban and industrial growth. He praised the efforts of the Gas Relief Department and other stakeholders in removing the stigma associated with the site.

Despite the cleanup, concerns remain about the toxic ash generated during incineration of the waste , which has been stored under controlled conditions in Pithampur amid legal and community discussions to prevent environmental harm.

During his return from the inspection, Yadav stopped his convoy at the request of a woman praying in Arif Nagar. Officials accompanying him included his secretary Alok Kumar Singh, Public Relations Commissioner Deepak Kumar Saxena, Gas Relief Director Swatantra Kumar Singh, and Municipal Commissioner Sanskriti Jain.
