Bhogapuram airport on track for June 2026 opening
: In a major announcement for the region, Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu has confirmed that flight operations from the new Bhogapuram Airport will commence in June 2026. This definitive timeline was provided after a comprehensive inspection of the construction site on Saturday, where the minister reviewed the project's progress directly with officials from the GMR Group, the company developing the airport.
The minister expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, noting that despite facing significant challenges, including recent rains, the construction has continued without interruption. He highlighted a key milestone, stating that 86% of the airport's construction is now complete. The minister emphasized that this progress is a testament to the dedication of the teams on the ground.
Rammohan Naidu also provided a detailed update on the crucial road connectivity needed to link the new airport with the city of Visakhapatnam. He revealed that a total of seven key points have been identified for road connectivity, and a target has been set to complete this network by March-April. This will ensure a seamless travel experience for passengers and improve logistical flow.
In addition to the immediate road plans, the minister outlined ambitious, long-term infrastructure projects. He announced that a detailed project report (DPR) is currently being prepared for the construction of a proposed beach corridor, which would offer a scenic route to the airport. An elevated corridor is also under consideration to further ease traffic congestion. The focus on these projects reflects a commitment to creating a world-class transit system for the airport.
Furthermore, the minister highlighted the government's efforts to enhance regional and international connectivity. He mentioned that requests have been received for a new route connecting Visakhapatnam to Kochi, indicating a plan to turn the new airport into a key hub for air travel in the region. The completion of the airport is expected to be a major catalyst for economic growth, creating new jobs and boosting tourism and trade in Vizianagaram and the surrounding North Andhra area.
