Telangana is charting an ambitious urban future with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy unveiling plans for ‘Bharat Future City’ , a sprawling, next-generation metropolis envisioned to rival global cities and power the state’s long-term economic transformation. At a high-profile event in Meerkhanpet, where he laid the foundation stone for key infrastructure, Reddy described the project as a defining pillar of the state’s growth strategy going beyond expansion to create a future-ready ecosystem for innovation, investment, and sustainable living.

The proposed city, spread across nearly 30,000 acres , is being designed as a net-zero and climate-resilient urban hub, integrating advanced sectors such as artificial intelligence , green energy, and manufacturing. The initiative aligns with Telangana’s broader ambition of becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2034, with Hyderabad positioned as its central engine. Drawing from global benchmarks like Singapore and New York, and development models from Japan, Germany, and South Korea, the government is aiming to create a city that matches international standards while maintaining local relevance.

At the core of the plan is a strong emphasis on participatory governance , with local leaders and communities expected to play an active role. Villages seeking inclusion in the project can send resolutions through Gram Sabhas, ensuring that development remains inclusive. The state has also begun attracting global investors through strategic summits, positioning the project as a major investment hub expected to generate employment and drive innovation-led growth.

A major infrastructure push will support the initiative, with Shamshabad set to emerge as a mega transport hub featuring high-speed rail links to Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, alongside metro connectivity and large-scale bus terminals. This integrated approach is expected to strengthen logistics and mobility, making the Future City a key node in national connectivity networks.

Addressing concerns around land acquisition, the Chief Minister assured that affected farmers would receive rehabilitation , compensation, and skill development opportunities, enabling them to benefit from the project’s long-term growth. Officials have been directed to handle the process sensitively, even as legal procedures for land pooling have largely been completed.

In a parallel move reflecting a broader social vision, the government has appointed 20 reformed former Maoists as ‘Giridarshaks’ , integrating them into the tourism sector. These trained guides will support visitors, promote local culture, and assist in maintaining safety in forest regions, marking a shift toward social integration and inclusive development. Reddy also urged senior Maoist leader Muppala Lakshmana Rao to surrender and join the mainstream, noting that many have already renounced extremism in recent years.

With its blend of technology, sustainability, infrastructure, and inclusion, Bharat Future City represents one of India’s most ambitious urban initiatives. If executed effectively, it could redefine city-building in the country, positioning Telangana at the forefront of future-ready development while setting new benchmarks for growth and governance.
