Beyond Borders: BCCI to Support Cricket Development in Fiji and Maldives
In a significant step towards strengthening cricket's presence across emerging nations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced plans to support cricket development initiatives in Fiji and Maldives , reinforcing India's growing role in the global expansion of the sport.
The decision was taken during the BCCI's Apex Council meeting held on Thursday, where members discussed ways to contribute to the growth of cricket beyond traditional strongholds. As part of the initiative, the Indian board will assist the two island nations by deploying experienced coaches and exploring additional avenues of support aimed at improving grassroots development , coaching standards, and overall cricket infrastructure.
According to BCCI officials, the move aligns with the broader efforts of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to nurture the sport in emerging cricketing regions and create stronger pathways for talent development.
"We will be sending across some of our coaches and providing them with other possible help," a BCCI official said, outlining the board's commitment to supporting the development programmes in both countries.
The latest initiative is not the first time the Indian cricket board has extended assistance to developing cricket nations. In 2019 , the BCCI sent former India cricketer Saba Karim , who was then serving as the board's General Manager for Game Development, along with former India fielding coach Abhay Sharma , to the Maldives to assess the local cricket ecosystem and identify areas where support could be provided.
Over the years, the BCCI has played an important role in helping several associate and emerging cricket nations strengthen their cricketing structures. Countries such as Afghanistan , which has since become a full member of the ICC , and Nepal have also benefited from India's expertise and developmental support.
With cricket continuing to expand into new territories, the BCCI's latest outreach reflects a growing recognition that the future of the game depends not only on established cricketing powers but also on nurturing talent and infrastructure in newer markets. By sharing coaching expertise and developmental resources, India is helping lay the groundwork for cricket's next phase of global growth.
For Fiji and Maldives, the partnership offers an opportunity to accelerate their cricketing ambitions, while for the BCCI, it represents another step in strengthening its influence as one of the sport's most important driving forces.
