Bengaluru Traffic AI Flags Guitar As Pillion, Issues ₹500 Helmet Violation Challan

An unusual traffic challan in Bengaluru has raised questions about AI-powered traffic enforcement after a camera allegedly mistook a guitar carried by a lone rider for a pillion passenger who was not wearing a helmet.

The incident involved Souvik Dutta, who was riding his wife’s two-wheeler alone on September 15, with a guitar strapped to his back. Dutta was wearing a helmet, but an automated traffic camera allegedly interpreted the guitar as a pillion rider and generated a challan for a passenger travelling without a helmet.

The notice carried a ₹500 fine and was issued to Dutta’s wife, who is the registered owner of the vehicle.

Dutta later raised the issue publicly, sharing the image captured by the traffic camera and questioning the apparent error. He said he had been riding alone and asked the Bengaluru Traffic Police to cancel the challan.

The incident gained attention because the camera image appeared to show Dutta riding with a helmet while the guitar was visible on his back. The automated system, however, allegedly treated the object as a second person on the two-wheeler.

Responding to the complaint, the Bengaluru Traffic Police asked Dutta to approach the department through its designated violation-rectification process. Officials also provided contact numbers for assistance.

The episode highlights an unusual limitation that can arise with automated traffic monitoring, where cameras have to interpret images of vehicles, riders and surrounding objects. While such systems are designed to detect violations at scale, disputed notices can require human review when an automated reading does not match the actual situation.

For Dutta, a routine ride with his guitar turned into an unexpected ₹500 traffic challan, with the authorities now set to examine his request for rectification.
