Bengaluru tenant gets huge water bill

A Reddit post by a Bengaluru tenant has gone viral after he revealed a monthly water bill of Rs 15,800 for a household with only two people. The tenant claims his landlord is "harassing" him with exorbitant charges and alleges he is being cheated.

The user shared a copy of the bill, which indicated a consumption of 1,65,000 liters of water. He expressed his frustration, noting that he and his roommate are rarely home and yet receive bills upwards of Rs 10,000 every month. The landlord, he says, offers "crazy reasons" for the high charges, and to make matters worse, the house often experiences water shortages for one to two days every fortnight.

The post drew widespread attention from social media users who were quick to point out that the charges were highly suspicious. Many commenters stated that a two-person household should not have a bill exceeding Rs 300 per month.

Several netizens suggested possible reasons for the unusually high bill:

• The water meter could be faulty, with air causing inflated readings.

• The landlord might be tampering with the meter in collusion with the person who takes the readings.

• The landlord could be using the tenant's water supply for commercial purposes, such as watering a large garden or supplying other properties.

Users shared their own experiences to highlight the discrepancy. One user with a family of four and a large garden said they only use between 15,000 and 20,000 liters of water per month. Many advised the affected tenant to compare bills with his neighbors and, if necessary, seek legal counsel to resolve the dispute.
