Police have registered a criminal case against a group of individuals accused of assaulting two men suspected of being illegal Bangladeshi nationals in a village on the outskirts of Bengaluru, while also launching an inquiry into allegations of police complicity in the matter.

The incident took place on July 16 in Chokkanahalli village , which falls under the jurisdiction of Nandagudi Police Station . Authorities said a video purportedly showing the assault later surfaced on social media, drawing public attention and prompting police action.

According to investigators, the accused allegedly confronted and attacked the two men after receiving information that illegal Bangladeshi migrants were residing in the village. Based on preliminary findings, police registered an assault case and initiated an investigation to identify everyone involved.

A senior police officer confirmed that legal proceedings have been started but declined to disclose the identities of the accused, citing the ongoing investigation. Officials said evidence, including the viral video and witness statements, is being examined to establish the sequence of events and determine individual roles.

Meanwhile, the two men have been taken into custody and produced before the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Bengaluru. Authorities said the matter is now under immigration procedures, and further action regarding their nationality and possible deportation will be decided in accordance with applicable laws.

Police also acknowledged allegations that certain personnel may have maintained contact with the suspected migrants before the incident. A departmental inquiry has been initiated to verify these claims. Officials said disciplinary action would be taken if any officer is found to have violated service rules or acted improperly.

The case has highlighted the challenges of balancing law enforcement , immigration verification, and public order while ensuring that legal procedures are followed. Investigators have appealed to the public not to take the law into their own hands and to report suspected violations through official channels, allowing authorities to handle such matters under due process and existing legal provisions.
