Bengal STF Probes Alleged Pakistan-Linked Espionage Network After Two Arrested

The West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) is investigating an alleged Pakistan-linked espionage and honey-trap network after the arrest of two individuals accused of maintaining contact with suspected handlers based across the border through encrypted communication platforms.

According to senior STF officials, Mohammed Hamim Mondal, who was arrested from Purba Bardhaman district on Friday, and his alleged associate Arpita Sarkar were in touch with Pakistan-based handlers using encrypted messaging applications that reportedly function without mobile SIM cards, making communication more difficult to trace. Investigators are examining the communication channels, identifying other possible contacts, and probing whether additional individuals were being recruited into the alleged network.

The STF has alleged that the duo conspired to honey-trap the son of a West Bengal minister of state, with the objective of abducting him and extorting money from his family. Officials claim the alleged conspiracy was orchestrated by Pakistan-based handlers believed to be linked to the Shahzad Bhatti gang. During interrogation, investigators reportedly identified several suspected handlers, including individuals referred to as Rana, Uzair, Abid Jatt, and Hamad, whose roles are now under scrutiny.

Authorities are also examining the alleged use of encrypted messaging platforms that do not require users to share phone numbers and reportedly avoid storing data on central servers, posing significant challenges for investigators.

The STF said Sarkar, a resident of Sahibganj district in Jharkhand, had been active on social media and aspired to become a model and influencer. Investigators suspect her online presence was allegedly intended to establish contacts and expand the purported espionage and honey-trap network beyond the initial conspiracy.

Officials stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and that multiple aspects, including possible cross-border links and the involvement of additional suspects, are being verified. The allegations are currently under investigation, and the guilt of the accused has not been established in court.
