Bengal government honours ‘Padwoman’ Priti Minj for menstrual health drive
The West Bengal government on Wednesday honoured Priti Minj , popularly known as ‘Padwoman’ , in recognition of her over a decade-long effort to promote menstrual health awareness among adolescent girls and young women in the remote tea garden areas of the Dooars region .
The Backward Class Welfare and Tribal Development Minister , Bulu Chik Baraik , handed over a certificate on behalf of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to Minj at her residence in Odlabari, Jalpaiguri district , on Tuesday.
For the past 10 years , Minj has tirelessly worked to break taboos and social barriers surrounding menstruation. She has been going door-to-door across labour lines , counselling girls and women on menstrual hygiene, emphasising safe practices, and encouraging the use of sanitary napkins.
A senior government official said, “Despite social and economic challenges , she remained steadfast in her mission. Her work has significantly improved awareness and hygiene practices among thousands of girls.”
Minj’s efforts have led to the widespread adoption of sanitary napkins , improving not only health outcomes but also the confidence and self-esteem of many young women. Her dedication earned her the affectionate title ‘Padwoman’ in the region.
Baraik said, “Women like Priti are the real strength of society . The movement she has built around menstrual health in remote tea garden areas is exemplary and can serve as a model for other parts of the state.”
An emotional Minj expressed her gratitude, saying, “I never started this work expecting awards or recognition. I only wanted my sisters to stay healthy and take care of their bodies without shame or fear. This recognition from the Chief Minister has increased my responsibility.”
The state recognition came after news of her selfless work reached ‘Nabanna’ , the state administrative headquarters. Minj has previously been honoured by several voluntary organisations and social groups for her contributions.
