Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari Resigns Nandigram Seat, Chooses to Retain Bhabanipur Mandate
BJP leader and MLA Suvendu Adhikari on Friday resigned from the Nandigram Assembly seat , opting to retain the Bhabanipur constituency , marking a key post election political development in West Bengal.
Adhikari submitted his resignation to West Bengal Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose within the mandatory 14 day period prescribed under Assembly rules. His decision formally ends his representation of one of the two constituencies he successfully contested in the recent elections.
The BJP leader had contested from both Nandigram in Purba Medinipur and Bhabanipur in south Kolkata , securing victories in both seats. In Nandigram, he defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Pabitra Kar by 9,665 votes , while in Bhabanipur he registered a bigger margin, defeating then sitting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by 15,105 votes .
By choosing Bhabanipur, a high profile urban constituency, Adhikari consolidates his position in Kolkata politics, while his resignation from Nandigram is expected to trigger a by election in the constituency.
The move is likely to reshape local political equations in both regions, with Nandigram once again set to witness fresh electoral competition, and Bhabanipur remaining a crucial political stronghold in the state capital.
