Beneath the Waves, A Nation Rises: Andaman Scripts History with Giant Underwater Tricolour
In a breathtaking blend of patriotism and precision, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands etched their name into the global record books on Saturday by unfurling the world’s largest underwater national flag at the iconic Radhanagar Beach on Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island).
Stretching an extraordinary 60 by 40 metres , the massive Tricolour was carefully deployed beneath the sea in a highly coordinated operation that brought together over 200 trained divers and multiple agencies. What unfolded underwater was not just a record attempt, but a powerful visual tribute to national pride, set against the serene beauty of the marine world.
The operation saw seamless collaboration between the Andaman and Nicobar Police , Forest Department , Indian Navy , Indian Coast Guard , and several professional scuba diving teams. Their meticulous planning and execution transformed a complex logistical challenge into a moment of historic achievement.
Senior officials, including Lieutenant Governor D K Joshi , Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar , and Director General of Police H S Dhaliwal , witnessed the landmark event. At precisely 10:35 AM , Guinness World Records adjudicator Rishi Nath officially confirmed the feat, handing over the certificate amid celebrations.
What added a deeply inspiring touch to the achievement was the participation of three young divers, Fateh Jahaan Singh (16) , Lavanya Eira (15) , and Ranvijay Singh (14) , who stood among the youngest contributors to this historic moment. Their voices reflected awe and pride, capturing the emotional depth of the experience. For them, holding the national flag beneath the ocean was not just thrilling, but unforgettable.
Beyond the record, the event signals something larger. It reinforces the rising global profile of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a hub for adventure tourism, marine exploration, and world-class events . It showcases how natural beauty, when paired with human ambition, can create moments that resonate far beyond geography.
The momentum is far from over. The administration is set to attempt another Guinness record, the ‘Tallest Human Stack’ underwater , at the Lighthouse dive site, promising yet another spectacle of coordination and courage.
For now, beneath the calm blue waters of Swaraj Dweep, a giant Tricolour has not just been unfurled, it has made history.
