A 55-year-old undertrial prisoner died after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest inside the Beed district jail, officials said on Monday, adding that no foul play has been reported in the incident.

The deceased, Ganesh Kashinath Pawar , a resident of Subhash Road in Beed, had been arrested in connection with a cheque bounce case . Jail authorities said he was sent to judicial custody six days ago after he failed to appear before a court for a scheduled hearing.

According to officials, Pawar’s health suddenly deteriorated on Saturday morning , following which prison staff rushed him to the district hospital for treatment. However, he was declared dead by doctors during treatment .

Jail superintendent Rajaram Chandne stated that the inmate’s death appeared to be due to natural causes , most likely a sudden and severe heart attack . “When his condition worsened within the jail premises, he was immediately shifted to the district hospital without delay,” Chandne said.

Initial findings suggest that Pawar died due to a massive cardiac arrest , which can occur due to underlying heart conditions, age-related factors, or stress. Authorities said a post-mortem examination will establish the exact cause of death.

Officials have clarified that no signs of custodial torture or physical assault have been reported so far . There have been no allegations from family members or others suggesting mistreatment in custody.

As per standard protocol, further clarity on the circumstances surrounding the death will emerge after the post-mortem report and any subsequent inquiry , if deemed necessary.

The case is currently being treated as a natural death in custody , pending final medical confirmation.
