The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a crucial review meeting in Mumbai on Thursday, September 3, bringing together key figures from the Indian cricket setup to assess recent performances and discuss the team’s future roadmap.

The meeting is expected to be attended by head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, and T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, along with senior BCCI officials.

A major focus will be India’s recent mixed results on overseas tours. The team suffered a 2-0 T20I series defeat in Ireland before losing the five-match T20I series against England 4-0. India also lost the ODI series in England, prompting concerns over the team’s performance away from home. The recent tour of Sri Lanka and the team’s Test performances are also expected to be reviewed.

Player fitness, injuries and workload management are likely to feature prominently in the discussions, particularly with important international assignments ahead, including the New Zealand tour. The BCCI is expected to examine player availability and coordination between the team management, selectors and the Centre of Excellence.

Another key topic could be Shubman Gill’s proposal to better prepare Indian batters against spin bowling, including the possibility of using Australia A matches as part of a specialised preparation programme.

The meeting will also put the spotlight on Rohit Sharma’s ODI future. With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, the BCCI faces important decisions regarding long-term team planning, experienced players and the next phase of India’s leadership transition.

Questions surrounding the futures of Gambhir and Agarkar may also arise, although the board is reportedly keen to avoid any rushed decisions. The objective of Thursday’s meeting is expected to be establishing a clear and coordinated direction for Indian cricket, balancing immediate concerns with long-term ambitions.
