BCCI Hails Ajit Agarkar After Trophy-Laden Tenure As Chairman Of Selectors
The BCCI has praised outgoing chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar for his commitment, conviction and contribution during a three-year tenure that coincided with one of the most successful periods in Indian cricket.
Agarkar’s tenure ended last month, and the BCCI has now begun the process of finding his successor after inviting applications for the vacant post. His future had been the subject of speculation for several weeks, with uncertainty over whether he would be offered an extension.
Looking back at his stint, the BCCI highlighted a string of major achievements, including three ICC trophies, two Asia Cup titles and back-to-back Asian Games gold medals, besides India’s run to the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
“Thank you, Mr Ajit Agarkar for your commitment, conviction and contribution as Chairman of the Men’s Selection Committee. Wishing you the very best for the journey ahead,” the board said in a post on X.
Agarkar’s tenure included India’s triumphs in the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy, giving his period at the helm a strong record of success across formats.
He was also part of a major transition in Indian cricket as two of the country’s biggest batting stars, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, retired from T20Is and Tests. Managing the shift from an established generation to a new core was among the key challenges faced by the selection committee.
BCCI’s tribute came shortly after head coach Gautam Gambhir also thanked Agarkar, saying history would be kinder to the former India all-rounder. Gambhir credited Agarkar’s belief in a “team first” approach as an important factor behind India’s three ICC triumphs.
With the BCCI now searching for a new chairman, Agarkar leaves behind a selection committee record shaped by major trophies, difficult transitions and a clear emphasis on building a team capable of competing across formats.
