BCCI confirms Iyer’s steady recovery after spleen injury

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from a Sydney hospital after a minor surgical procedure for a spleen and rib cage injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia.

Iyer injured his lower left rib cage while taking a tough running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling on October 25. The BCCI said in a statement that the 30-year-old is “stable and recovering well” and will remain in Sydney for follow-up consultations before returning to India once he is cleared to travel.

According to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, Iyer suffered a blunt abdominal injury that led to a “laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding.” The bleeding was promptly controlled through a minor procedure, and the batsman has since responded positively to treatment.

Iyer is expected to be out of action for at least two months, ruling him out of the upcoming white-ball series.

The BCCI also expressed gratitude to Dr Kouroush Haghigi and his medical team in Sydney, as well as Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for overseeing the player’s recovery.

The board said its medical team is in constant touch with specialists in both countries and is “pleased with Iyer’s progress.”
