Bayern Munich in Panic Mode! Three Key Stars Injured Just Days Before Atletico Showdown
Bayern Munich’s injury problems mounted during their 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund, with Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari all forced off the field in a major setback for the Bundesliga champions ahead of their crucial Champions League fixture against Atletico Madrid.
The three injuries overshadowed an intense Klassiker that saw Bayern and Dortmund share the points, leaving both sides level at the top of the Bundesliga standings.
Bayern assistant coach Aaron Danks expressed particular concern over Saibari, suggesting the midfielder could have suffered a serious ankle injury. However, he cautioned that it was too early to determine the full extent of the damage.
“Saibari’s ankle looks quite a serious injury,” Danks said, adding that Gnabry appeared to have a muscular problem while the club was still awaiting further information on Olise.
Saibari’s injury occurred after a collision with Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. The midfielder went one-on-one with Kobel, who saved his attempt, before the two players tangled while challenging for the rebound. Saibari was visibly in pain and had to be helped off by two members of Bayern’s medical team.
The Moroccan midfielder, who impressed at the World Cup, joined Bayern from PSV Eindhoven during the tournament in a reported $63 million transfer.
Just two minutes after Saibari was replaced by Nathaniel Brown, Gnabry also left the pitch after appearing to suffer a muscular injury. He was replaced by Josip Stanisic.
Olise became the third casualty late in the match. The Ballon d’Or nominee went down away from the ball, covered his face with his hands and signalled for a substitution before walking off.
Bayern were already dealing with several fitness concerns. Head coach Vincent Kompany missed the match after being discharged from hospital following treatment for an infection. Forward Luis Diaz was unavailable because of a thigh problem, while goalkeeper Manuel Neuer missed out with a foot injury, allowing Jonas Urbig to start.
With Atletico Madrid visiting in the Champions League on Tuesday, Bayern will be anxiously awaiting medical assessments of their three latest injury concerns.
