Battling cancer for six years, farmer's son from Chhattisgarh clears UPSC on third attempt

In a story that reflects extraordinary resilience and determination, Sanjay Dahariya , a 38-year-old from Mahasamund district in Chhattisgarh , has cleared the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025 after overcoming a six-year battle with cancer and multiple career setbacks.

Dahariya secured the 946th rank in the examination in his third attempt , turning years of struggle into a moment of pride not just for his family but for his entire village.

Born into a farmer’s family in Beltukri village , Dahariya’s academic journey began at a modest government school. His early potential became evident when he was selected to study at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Mana, near Raipur , from Class 5 — a turning point that broadened his educational opportunities.

Like many aspirants, his path was far from straightforward. Dahariya first worked with State Bank of India in West Bengal between 2009 and 2011. However, driven by larger ambitions, he resigned from the job to prepare for civil services.

Just when his plans were taking shape, life dealt him a devastating blow. In 2012, he was diagnosed with cancer in the salivary glands , forcing him into a prolonged and painful treatment that lasted nearly six years.

The illness could easily have ended his dreams. Instead, Dahariya fought through the difficult phase with remarkable determination. Despite the physical and emotional toll of cancer, along with a minor vision impairment, he continued rebuilding his career, working briefly at a bank in Raipur and later at the Mahasamund Post Office.

His civil services journey formally began in 2022 when he started appearing for the UPSC examination. After two unsuccessful attempts, persistence finally paid off in 2025.

“I hope to serve the country through the civil services,” Dahariya said after the results were announced. “Whether I secure an IAS cadre or another service, my commitment to public service remains firm.”

Local officials and residents have hailed his achievement as an inspiring example of courage. Mahasamund Collector Vinay Kumar Langeh and District Education Officer Vijay Kumar Lahare congratulated him, noting that his story demonstrates how determination and perseverance can triumph over the toughest challenges.

Today, Dahariya’s success stands as more than just a rank on a results sheet. It is a powerful reminder that even after years of illness and uncertainty, hope and hard work can rewrite one’s destiny.
