Batting firepower roars, but can India’s bowling hold nerve in do or die clash?

India’s batting has finally found its rhythm, but as they head into a virtual quarterfinal against West Indies at the iconic Eden Gardens on Sunday, serious questions still hover over their bowling attack .

After West Indies fell to South Africa and India crushed Zimbabwe, this Group 1 Super Eights clash has turned into a knockout in everything but name. The winner books a semifinal date with England in Mumbai on March 5. The stakes could not be higher.

India’s 256 for 4 , the highest total of this T20 World Cup, was a statement of intent. The reshuffled top order delivered when it mattered most. Sanju Samson’s brisk start set the tempo, Abhishek Sharma responded with a much needed half century after a lean run, and Tilak Varma’s explosive 44 not out off 16 balls at No. 6 provided the late surge. For the first time in the tournament, the top six clicked in unison .

But the bowling remains a concern. While Arshdeep Singh’s triple strike and the control of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya offer reassurance, Varun Chakravarthy’s dip in form has raised eyebrows. The mystery spinner has struggled with length and consistency, conceding heavily in crucial matches. The team management now faces a tough call whether to persist with him or bring in Kuldeep Yadav for this high pressure encounter.

Shivam Dube’s expensive spell against Zimbabwe, where he leaked 46 runs in just two overs, has further highlighted the lack of bowling stability. On a surface that could offer pace and bounce, India may rely heavily on their pace trio to deliver decisive spells.

West Indies, led by Shai Hope, remain one of the most dangerous batting sides in the tournament. Even in defeat, they showed resilience by recovering from 83 for 7 to post 176 for 8. Their batting depth and fearless finishing make them a serious threat under lights in Kolkata.

With a semifinal spot on the line, this is more than just another match. It is a do or die battle where India’s explosive batting will be tested against the firepower and confidence of the Caribbean side.
