Barcelona have completed the blockbuster signing of Spain captain Rodri from Manchester City, bringing one of world football’s most influential midfielders to Camp Nou in a deal reportedly worth €76.5 million.

The 30-year-old midfielder has signed a contract until 2030, Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday, after completing his medical and the two clubs finalised the details of the transfer.

Rodri arrives as one of the biggest names in world football, having played a central role in Spain’s recent World Cup triumph, where he was named the tournament’s best player. His move also reunites him with several international teammates, including Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Pau Cubarsí, Gavi and Pedri.

“For me, it’s a dream to play for Barcelona,” Rodri said after arriving in the city. “I’m excited about being with my teammates, many of whom I already know. Now it’s time to get to work and give my best.”

The transfer marks a major statement of intent from Barcelona as the club looks to strengthen an already formidable squad and chase a third consecutive La Liga title.

Rodri had only one year remaining on his contract with Manchester City, making this summer a crucial window for the Premier League club. His departure further weakens City’s midfield following Bernardo Silva’s move to Real Madrid.

One of the most decorated midfielders of his generation, Rodri joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 and became a key figure during one of the most successful periods in the English club’s history. He famously scored the winning goal against Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League final, before winning the Ballon d’Or in 2024 following his success with Spain.

Barcelona have also been active in the transfer market, bringing in England forward Anthony Gordon following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, while defender João Cancelo is also expected to join.

Rodri did not feature in City’s 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal on Sunday as he continued his recovery from minor back surgery following the World Cup.

Now, after years of dominating English football, Rodri begins a new chapter in Spain, and Barcelona hope his arrival could provide the midfield authority needed to power their next era of success.
