In a result that transcended politics and touched the deeply personal, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar scripted history on Monday, winning the Baramati assembly bypoll by a staggering margin of over 2.18 lakh votes , a figure that now stands as a new national record , surpassing the previous benchmark of 2.14 lakh votes.

The bypoll, held on April 23, was necessitated by the tragic death of Ajit Pawar , the former Deputy Chief Minister and a towering figure in Maharashtra politics, who perished in a plane crash near the Baramati airstrip on January 28 this year. His sudden passing left both a political and emotional void in a constituency he had shaped over decades. Stepping into that space, for the very first time as an electoral candidate, his wife Sunetra Pawar carried the weight of a legacy and the quiet grief of a constituency that adored “Dada.”

She secured a total of 2,18,930 votes , while all 22 rivals combined managed just 4,837 votes , a result that was not just a win, but an unambiguous statement of public sentiment. The voter turnout stood at 58.17% , with over 2.23 lakh people casting their ballots.

What made the moment even more striking was how Sunetra Pawar chose to receive it. She described the result as a reflection of the love voters held for Ajit Pawar , calling the victory a “grateful tribute” to him. In a message that resonated far beyond Baramati, she urged party workers to avoid victory rallies and celebrations with gulal , asking them instead to honour Dada’s memory through restraint and dignity , values she said defined him.

Her winning margin surpassed even Ajit Pawar’s 2019 record , when he had won by 1,65,265 votes , long considered the gold standard in the constituency. His widow has now gone well beyond that mark.

In Baramati, this was never just an election. It was a constituency’s way of saying goodbye to one leader, and hello to another. Carried forward not on slogans, but on quiet strength and an unspoken promise , Sunetra Pawar has begun what she herself called “not the end, but just the beginning.”
