Bar Council of India Announces AIBE-XXI Results, Over 1.75 Lakh Law Graduates Appeared

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has announced the results of the All India Bar Examination (AIBE-XXI) , with an overall pass percentage of 65.92 per cent . The examination, which serves as a qualifying test for law graduates seeking to practise in Indian courts, witnessed participation from 1,75,701 candidates across the country.

According to the BCI, the AIBE-XXI was conducted on June 7 at 292 examination centres spread across 60 cities . Among the candidates who appeared, 1,10,909 were male candidates, 64,784 were female candidates, and eight were transgender candidates . The council said the examination was conducted in a smooth, transparent and orderly manner , following prescribed guidelines to ensure fairness. The test was held under the supervision of the AIBE Monitoring Committee , headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Hima Kohli .

The BCI said the results were initially planned to be calculated on the basis of 100 marks. However, after reviewing the question paper and result summary, the Monitoring Committee decided to moderate the qualifying criteria by reducing the cut-off marks by three marks . The original qualifying marks were fixed at 45 marks for General category candidates and 40 marks for SC, ST and PwD candidates .

The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is a national-level certification examination conducted by the BCI for law graduates who wish to begin legal practice in India. Candidates who successfully clear the examination are awarded the Certificate of Practice (CoP) , allowing them to appear and represent clients before courts, tribunals and other legal forums.

To appear for AIBE, candidates must have completed a recognised law degree (three-year LLB or five-year integrated LLB programme) from a BCI-approved institution and must be enrolled with a State Bar Council. The examination assesses candidates’ understanding of basic legal principles, professional ethics, constitutional law, and practical aspects of legal practice.

After clearing AIBE and obtaining the Certificate of Practice, successful candidates can pursue careers as advocates in courts, legal consultants, corporate lawyers, government legal officers, judicial service aspirants, and professionals in law firms or legal organisations. The certification is considered an important step for fresh law graduates entering the legal profession in India.
