Bangladesh Releases List of Newly Elected MPs and Government to Be Formed Soon
Bangladesh’s 13th general election has reached its final stage , ending a period of political uncertainty . The Election Commission on Saturday released the official gazette listing the winners from 297 of the country’s 300 parliamentary constituencies . The notification was signed by Akter Ahmed, Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat. With the gazette’s publication, the path is cleared for the newly elected representatives to take their oaths and soon enter parliament.
Polling was conducted last Thursday across 299 constituencies , while results for two constituencies were temporarily withheld by the Commission. Official statistics indicate that voter turnout was 59.44 per cent, a notable figure given the recent political instability .
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a decisive victory , winning 209 out of 297 declared seats , achieving a clear majority. This marks the party’s return to power after nearly two decades. Analysts note that voters expressed a strong desire for change through the democratic process.
The right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami party emerged as the second-largest , securing 68 seats . Historically sidelined during the previous government’s tenure, the party’s performance indicates its potential influence in the upcoming government. Notably, the Awami League, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was barred from contesting.
These elections are among the most critical in Bangladesh’s history . In August 2024 , massive student protests compelled Sheikh Hasina to end her 15-year tenure and leave the country. The subsequent political vacuum, instability, and attacks on minorities created a tense environment for the elections. Citizens hope that the elections will restore democratic governance.
The newly elected MPs are expected to take their oaths soon . Following the swearing-in, the BNP-led government will assume office and face challenges including restoring law and order , reviving the economy , and strengthening international relations . The people of Bangladesh are looking forward to a new chapter with renewed hope.
